2nd March 2003 : With his victory in the Rally of Turkey, Carlos Sainz successfully won his 25th World Rally Championship and his first as member of the Citroën team. He outplayed the British-Richard Burns (Peugeot 206 WRC), who took advantage of the opportunity to take the lead in the World Championship and the Belgian, François Duval (Ford Focus WRC).
With this 25th victory, the twice world champion in 1990 and 1992 shared the record with his team member, Colin Mc Rae, in front of the Finnish, Tommi Mäkinen (Subaru), credited with 24 points. Coming up to 41, Carlos Sainz is looked on as an old guy among the young pilots. He competed in 168 rallies and mounted the podium 85 times, thus every other time.
No one really knew what to expect from this new event now part of the WRC. The Rally of Turkey, held from 27th February to 2nd March, constitues the 3rd round of this Championship: 18 special trials totalising 3337,88 km of extremely dry and brittle tracks, so much so that out of 60 competitors, only 27 finished.
